NORTHERN BOUNDARIES

Although inland portions of the City of Rockingham, Town of Kwinana and City of Cockburn drain into the Peel-Harvey estuary, these local government areas are currently not a formal part of the South West NRM region, or the Peel-Harvey NRM subregion.

The north-western portions of the catchment, and associated internally draining or coastal areas do however occur within the hydrological boundary of the Murray River Basin. They are therefore included within the administrative area of operation for the Department of Environment’s Peel-Kwinana Region.

Importantly, these areas are also recognised as part of the Peel-Harvey catchment area by both the National Land and Water Audit, and the National Pollutant Inventory, in relation to the nation-wide assessments of the condition of land, water and biota resources.

For all of the above reasons, the local government areas of the City of Rockingham, Town of Kwinana and City of Cockburn have been addressed within the PHCC NRM Plan.

An Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has now been endorsed by both the Swan and South West Catchments Council to formalise the working arrangements and the distribution of NHT and NAPSWQ funds for this area.
